Zara Janjua is a Scottish Pakistani presenter, journalist, comedian, actor and producer who lives in London. She was a broadcast journalist for national news programs and a producer for daytime shows before moving into entertainment, appearing in BBC comedy shows as both a host and a performer. Zara is an activist for equality and human rights.
Kate is a Yorkshire bred comedy writer who was most recently in the writers room for new Sky comedy Bloods, prior to this she was selected for the 2017 BBC Comedy Room scheme where she began her shortlisted script Mulch Wanted, as well as this project she is currently writing two new TV comedy scripts.
Holly is an Actor/Writer who has trained with Identity School of Acting, Funny Women, and Soho Theatre. Her ambition is to be an established comedic writer and performer.
Tess is an emerging writer based in London and Somerset. She graduated from the University of East Anglia with a first class degree in English Literature with Creative Writing and was recently longlisted for the Snoo Wilson Prize for Scriptwriting.
Olivia Phipps is a writer, producer and stand-up director based in Basingstoke.
A Suffolk girl living in London, I have a background in cabaret, burlesque and costume. I’ve written about my dating adventures in publications like the Evening Standard and Sunday Times Magazine. In the past few years, I’ve become interested in satire and have created sketches about femininity and stereotypes.
Marla landed from Oz over a decade ago and is still confused Christmas isn’t in Summer. Known for making odd videos in the middle of the night, putting the kettle on, and winning an award as a tap-dancing Panto horse’s arse-end (yep, *officially* an award winning horse’s arse).
Lizzy is a comedy writer and filmmaker from Newcastle. She studied Physics and Philosophy and still secretly wants to be an astronaut one day.
Her films have screened at festivals including Cannes, Berwick, Encounters and at BFI Southbank and her TV pilot was shortlisted for this year’s BBC Comedy Writersroom.
Mo and Steph met at Bournemouth University and have since moved to Manchester to make comedy sketches.
When they’re not being silly in front of the camera, you’ll find Steph making sweet beats in her room, and Mo writing horror screenplays in her pyjamas.
Born and raised in Singapore, Eryn Tett is now a Manchester based alternative comedian.
Winner of the Cherry Comedy Break out Act of the Year 2020, she’s been waiting for stand-up’s return by continuing to write and creating her own small comedy videos at home.
Briony is a writer and performer. She created the web-series Live With It alongside Juliana Matsubara, Jamie Mills and Paula Galan.
This year, she was shortlisted for the New Voice Awards and made the BBC Writersroom longlist. She writes for Cinegirl magazine and co-hosts its new podcast.
Rhiannon is a writer, actor, multi-instrumentalist and professionally trained dancer. She specialises in writing silly songs (mostly about silly men). She is in the process of writing a musical comedy series and her original song ‘Naked Pictures’ has had over 150,000 views online and was recently featured on BBC Upload.
Her style has been described as a mix of Fleabag and a modern day Victoria Wood – accolades she will anxiously hope to live up to.
Sascha LO is a 19 year old stand up comedian (and gap year student) based in London. In her first 4 months of comedy, she was a Komedia and Stand-Up Get-Up finalist and Leicester Square New Comedian semi-finalist.
This is her first venture into sketch writing/acting/directing/editing.
From the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, Nikola is a London-based performer who originally trained as a dancer at The Dance School of Scotland and Bird College.
In 2015, she started a YouTube channel (Nikola in the Pond) dedicated to comedy videos. She now has over 591,000 views.
Megan and Lily are actresses, writers and co-founders of Double Yellow Theatre Company. This year, Megan performed her play Bourne at The Vault Festival and her latest comedy, Two Birds, was short-listed for the Pint Sized Plays awards.
Lily is currently in pre-production for her latest short dystopian film, ARPU.
Kitty Paterson is a Glasgow based Writer/Performer/Director with a background in Fine Art, Cabaret and Physical Theatre. She adores terrible Sci-fi and Horror B-movies and all things 80s.
With a natural dry wit she discovered her knack for writing comedy back in 2013 and has mostly never looked back. Mostly.
We’ve had the great pleasure of seeing some of the greatest new female comedy acts begin their careers by taking part in the Funny Women Awards. So many of our alumni have gone on to do amazing things, and become household names. We couldn’t be more proud.

If you have a short film or sketch that you think is hilarious, then enter your work for our Comedy Shorts Award to be in with a chance of winning some life-changing support and mentoring from comedy professionals.
WHAT KIND OF FILM ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
A 1- 6 minute film that can take the form of anything comical. It’s a great opportunity to show us your creative flair and have fun!
WHO CAN ENTER?
This award is open to all women filmmakers and content developers. The film must be an original narrative created, produced and devised by a woman, or women, although male cast and crew members are allowed.
ARE THERE ANY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR MY FILM?
Yes – we require all films to be 6 minutes or under, to be entirely original dialogue, to not feature brand logos and most importantly, to only use music with the written consent of the performer and/or publisher either personally or via the PRS system https://www.prsformusic.com/ .
WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY FILM?
We will broadcast selected entries on our Funny Women YouTube channel and social media (so keep an eye out) and the top 10 finalists’ films will also hosted on a dedicated Funny Women Comedy Shorts Awards page on our website. We will also broadcast the final 3 entries as part of the grand final night.
HOW IS IT JUDGED?
Films are judged for production, concept, delivery/performance, creativity, writing and overall funniness. The top 10 films are then viewed by an independent judging panel of top television and film industry professionals who will choose one overall winner and two runners up. The final three will be invited to attend the grand final in London on the 23rd September.
