Funny Women was born out of a confrontation between our founder Lynne Parker and a misogynist comedy promoter. When she quizzed him why women were so unrepresented on the live comedy circuit, the promoter told Lynne that ‘women aren’t funny’ and there are ‘no funny women’. The rest is history!
We are a not for profit community, providing the opportunity to perform, write or create comedy and empowering women to ‘stand up to stand out’ both professionally and personally.
We are best known for the Funny Women Awards, first launched in 2003, and over 4,000 women have taken part in 17 competitions. Our Awards are free to enter with categories for performance, writing, short film, best show and web series and an industry award for comedy writing. Funny Women has changed the face of female comedy at grassroots level providing a valuable platform to new and unrepresented talent.
We currently run (approximately) 120 events per year. Now we are creating a platform for your patronage to support and grow our community, both economically and geographically. We want everybody to benefit, and your support means that we can offer our events and services more widely, and to people, communities, charities and organisations whose resources are limited.
