Award-winning musical comedian Selena Mersey is a self-confessed overthinker who’s found herself in a long-term relationship for the first time in her life. Unfortunately, she’s also been reading about Freud. Can her straight-passing romance survive the weight of anxiety, progressive politics and an incredibly impactful psychology A Level?
Selena’s debut hour at Edinburgh Fringe is full of twists and turns, leaving the audience delighted and entertained throughout. The unexpected change in pace, with the use of songs, adds to the comedic timing perfectly. This autobiographical show links more serious subjects about Selena’s life with comedy, burlesque and original songs, as well as brilliant observations involving the previously mentioned, Mr Freud.
Selena is engaging and witty, from her manic and unnerving stares at the audience, to her cheeky winks during her songs. Her partner and tech Dan deserves a mention, as they expertly navigated the many lighting and sound cues throughout adding to the narrative perfectly.
A very enjoyable and highly entertaining hour, for any fans of traditional burlesque with a comedic twist, and hilarious musical comedy.
