Lynn Ruth Miller returns to the Fringe with a lovely soulful retrospective show which tells a story rather than the song and stand up of the usual award winning cabaret act that she has performed for the last few years.
At 81 Lynn Ruth is possibly one of the oldest performers in the fest but she has a zest for life that puts most of us to shame. Yet the theme of her show is ‘fear’ and Lynn Ruth examines what in her fear has stopped her from doing and how it has changed the path of her life. She urges herself to ‘get a grip’ which is the title of the show and a good motto for a life clearly lived to the full.
The show is a series of vignettes which explore her relationships – her domineering Jewish mother, her hapless father, the bully boy next door and a charismatic teaching colleague. The set is peppered with faded photographs of family, friends and Lynn Ruth herself – the experience is homely and charming, like a cosy chat with an articulate elderly relative.
And oh what a relative! From living a hippy-like existence in a Winnebago to campus life as a teacher, Lynn Ruth’s stories span several decades during which the world has changed so radically. This show is a ‘must see’ and well worth a break from the standard satirical comedy so prevalent at the Fringe. Enjoy an altogether gentler pace that still packs a punch.
