Off Cut Roots at Theatre 503

At Funny Women we love to see new, fresh talent that uses women and women's issues as inspiration. Which is why we're excited that the people behind the Off Cut Short Play Festival are heading to Theatre 503 with its sister project, Off Cut Roots. Two brand-new one-act plays (which have been inspired by audience reaction to being asked what theatre lacks for them,) will be cultivated from scratch all the way through to performance in what is sure to be a bold and thought provoking double bill.

The words that were used as inspiration for the creation of the plays were… 'Astonishment. Jouissance. Ambition. Women. Hope. Finesse. Balls. Joy. Communion. Mutiny.'

The plays that have come out of these inspirational words 'Sophie in Wonderland' by E. Moffat, and 'More Dead Girls' by Troodie Mootz.

In Sophie in Wonderland Sophie trawls the internet looking for women. Who has the time for dating when all you want is sex? But when married Merle turns up on her doorstep, an opportunity presents itself that she finds difficult to resist.

“I see myself as one of them nuns they used to send to Africa telling everyone about Jesus. Except I want to tell everyone women should fuck women.”

In More Dead Girls the body-count is rising and Phelan is under pressure; just how many dead girls can he reasonably accommodate? A writer struggles with his demons, literally, during one shocking night of revelation, debate and mutiny.

“More dead girls? Not sure I can squeeze any more in, Adrian…"

HOW TO BE A FUNNY WOMAN: IN THE BEGINNING

As somebody who facilitates comedy rather than performing it, this book will take the form of an anthology, a collection of my own experiences combined with those of some of the funniest and most brilliant women I have had the privilege to work with. I’ve watched them take the comedy world by storm and some of my observations may help you to continue their legacy.
