I don’t think I’ve ever knowingly missed one of Lucy Porter’s Edinburgh shows since I’ve been going up to the Fringe. I love the fact that she always has a venue nestled away at the back of the Pleasance Courtyard and has a wonderfully loyal audience who ensure that Lucy is on their itinerary, no doubt alongside the Tattoo and popular BBC Radio 4 faves.
There’s nothing wrong with this, of course, yet in terms of performance, Lucy’s skills stretch beyond and above the broadcast-appropriate material that earns her a living and always serves up something new and fresh at the Fringe.
I took my crew of relatively hard-to-please friends to see this year’s show and choice of final show of our stay was vindicated!
I’m pleased to report that Lucy’s narrative this year really resonated despite the distractions of a dishevelled bed on stage, colourful pyjamas and Tigger slippers.
We’ve all had the proverbial wake-up call over the last two years about our health, age, choice of lifestyle and more. Lucy and her actor/writer husband Justin Edwards are not alone in their acceptance of needing more exercise, drinking less alcohol, and consolidating important relationships with friends and family. Lucy’s depiction of longstanding friendships and the acceptance of getting older, ticked a lot of boxes for me.
As always top marks for entertainment value and an hour’s respite from the ‘wild west’ of the Fringe.
