We have now come to the end of our Meet the 2021 Finalists series, but we’re ending on a high with Sharon Wanjohi! The judges loved Sharon’s smart take on sexuality and race, paired with plenty of witty asides. We caught up with Sharon to talk about the Awards, why truth can be funny and her comedy wife Abbie Edwards.
Funny Women: How did it feel to perform at the Funny Women Awards final?
Sharon Wanjohi: Amazing!! I physically couldn’t believe I was a finalist until I was on stage. And even then it didn’t feel real. Honestly, it was such a privilege to perform with such talented women.
FW: How did you get started in comedy?
SW: I was forced on stage by my now comedy wife then president of the University of Southampton comedy society Abbie Edwards.
FW: What inspires your comedy material?
SW: I think I try to draw on my own experiences, the truth is always funny. Ok maybe not always but most of the time you can force it to be funny.
FW: What would you say to anyone considering entering the Awards next year?
SW: Seriously go for it! I hesitated to enter but the support from Funny Women and all the amazing funny women and non-binary babes I’ve met along the way have been the absolute highlight of 2021.
FW: And lastly, who are your favourite funny women?
SW: Hardest question ever. In no particular order: Gina Yashere, Abbie Edwards, Helen Bauer, Dulcé Sloan, London Hughes.
