Runner up Bronwyn Sweeney impressed the judges at the 2021 Funny Women Awards Grand Final with her high energy performance and inside secrets about working in advertising. We caught up with Bronwyn to talk about what inspires her comedy and the strange situation where she discovered she was funny…
Funny Women: How did it feel to perform at the Funny Women Awards final?
Bronwyn Sweeney: Honestly, best gig of my life. Terrifying, exhilarating, life-affirming.
How did you get started in comedy?
BS: I know this sounds bad, but my first time making a group of random people laugh was at a funeral when I was 15. I hadn’t intended to be funny but the whole ordeal was so sad and I wanted to talk about the happier memories of the person who had passed. I think weirdly from that moment I always knew I’d find my way to comedy. I just didn’t expect it to be a two-day comedy course my work paid for in South London at the age of 29.
FW: What inspires your comedy material?
BS: Working in advertising and being a fake American from Blackpool.
FW: What would you say to anyone considering entering the Awards next year?
BS: Don’t hesitate, just do it. No matter what happens, it connects you to a group of hilarious and inspiring people.
FW: And lastly, who are your favourite funny women?
BS: So many to choose from. Catherine Tate, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Iliza Schlesinger, Gina Yashere, Dulce Sloane, Diane Morgan, my sister (lol), Ali Wong and everyone from the final including our hilarious host Jayde Adams.
