BBC Studios Funny Parts

BBC Studios, Funny Parts, is set to release a new series, Unhinged, featuring 20 comedy shorts on YouTube featuring over 65 UK-based comedians.

Launched back in 2022, Funny Parts, has given new, rising and existing comedians from across the UK the opportunity to showcase their content. Famous names who have featured on the platform include Martin Trenaman, Olga Koch, Dave Benson-Philips, Nina Wadia, Rosie Holt.

The new series has been produced in collaboration with Super Daddy Yacht’s productions who are the team behind Late Night Lycett and Seance Cast just to name a couple.

Although we get excited by the odd famous face, promoting and supporting new and rising talent is at the heart of what we do, so the team were excited when the BBC approached us to review three new short form videos.

One Parent

Written by Charlie Dinkin and starring Nimisha Odedra as the daughter, Martin Trenaman as Dad and Nina Wadia as Mum, the sketch follows the daughter’s conversations with her parents now she’s returned from university for the holidays. Together the parents seem fine, everything is normal, or so it seems, but things change as soon as she’s left with just one of them who decide it’s time to share anything and everything. Both parents have something to say and it’s even more cringey, surprising and awkwardly funny than you’d expect. What you’re thinking now, times that by 10.

This is a well-filmed fun, yet creepy sketch showing how relationships change as soon as the child is well, no longer a child anymore, even if it is inappropriate. It’s the horror of the parent-child relationship turning on its head when Mum and Dad don’t have anyone else to talk to. And as for Granny, well, she’s no longer holding back, get ready to hear what Granny has been holding back.

Selling Swindon

Written by Emerald Patterson, an established writer and producer known for Have I got News for You and Comedians in Quarantine, Selling Swindon, is a short comedy perfect for Gen Z.

Selling Swindon is real estate meets real housewives (of Swindon) character comedy of two rival agents desperately trying to secure the lease of a ‘stunning’ rental property, in the same viewing. Cleverly written and well acted, it’s an unusual and funny take on the lengths real estate agents will go to secure a tenant. If the cast of any Real Housewives series were cheap real estate agents holding a glass of cheap champers, wearing faux designer wear while playing to a camera, this would be it. Why not have your own reality TV show? After all, with so many estate agents around, you need to stand out from the crowd!

Eye Test

Opticians are people too and Charlie Dinkin’s comically written sketch is a testament to that. Starring Sunil Patel as the lovesick optician and Ed Night as the unknowing patient thrown into what appears to be the perils of the optician’s romantic life, Eye Test is a hilariously cringe-inducing sketch which takes each joke that little bit further. Every moment of the sketch you feel every awkward moment as the optician asks and asks and asks once again for their patient’s opinion on his hopeless holiday snaps that become more and more embarrassing. What do you say to the man who holds your eyeballs health in their hands? Well…you’ll just have to watch.

BBC Studios Funny Parts’ new series Unhinged will be released shortly, in the meantime, you can watch their previous series on YouTube.
