Katie Green

Stand up comic Katie Green (@katiegcomedy) brings her debut stand up hour show ¡Ay Mija! to the Fringe this year, covering family, her Salvadoran and British heritage, a double quinceanera and her starring role in an R&B music video.

Naturally funny and sunny in equal amounts, Katie Green has an up-beat stand up style that makes it impossible not to warm to her.

The show starts with some casual questions to the room – where in the world we all hail from, etc – which sets Green up nicely to launch into her heritage and how it’s shaped her. Green tells us tales about her British Grandpa who emigrated, bringing his Fish and Chip shop to LA, a Latina Grandmother who likes trap music, and what being raised Catholic was like. Green jokes that her deep interest in her heritage lead her to study Latin American studies at University which she admits sounds like ‘the whitest thing ever’.

Particular favourite moments for me include the warm anecdotes about her grandmother; her interest and support for Katie’s love life, as well as being Bad Bunny’s no.1 fan. Green warmly recollects her Catholic upbringing and points out the hilarity in her experiences – on arriving in the UK from LA for example, her grandmother sends a framed picture of the Virgin Mary to hang up, naturally doing wonders for Green’s sex life. Another brilliant call back moment in the show is Green throwing herself a ‘double quinceanera’ for her 30th, since she didn’t get one age 15.

¡Ay Mija! is a traditional stand up show that Green puts her characteristic warm-hearted and mischievous flair on. With flowing storytelling sprinkled with witty word play and quick punch lines, Green makes it look effortless.

You can catch Katie Green’s show ¡Ay Mija! at 9:35, 24-25 August, @ Baby Grand, The Pleasance Courtyard
