June’s finally here, and although the forecast is saying it may snow at some point… we refuse to let that get us down. As ever, we’ve rounded up some fantastic comedy to warm you up nicely – from traditional stand up to variety nights, from seasoned pros to fresh new acts. So strap in!

1. TOURS, WIPS AND DEBUTS

ROSE MATAFEO: NEW AND OLD MATERIAL

Tues 11 June @ 8:00 PM, The Bill Murray, London

Creator and star of star crossed lovers sit-com Starstruck and winner of the Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2018 with her show Horndog, it’s safe to say Matafeo is a capital B capital D Big Deal. This month, you can catch her performing her WIP show at The Bill Murray, so get a move on and bag yourself a ticket.

JOSIE LONG: WORK IN PROGRESS

Sat 22 June @ 3:30 PM, The Bill Murray, London

Josie Long is a prolific comedy legend, with around 30 TV and radio show credits, an Edinburgh Comedy Award win, as well as bagging 3 other nominations for Best Show, from a whopping 7 solo Edinburgh shows and 5 UK tours. This month, you can catch Long trying out her new material at The Bill Murray. It’s sure to be a giggle.

MICHELLE BRASIER: REFORM

Thurs 6 June @ 8:00 PM, The Clapham Grand, London

Michelle Brasier is a New Zealand born musical comedian, who continues her tour show Reform this month in the UK of the back of sell out shows in Edinburgh last year. Brasier brings Broadway style ballads that delve into and celebrate emotion, and in this show specifically, about the curse of the online scam.

SARA BARRON: ANYTHING FOR YOU (WIP)

Thurs 13 June @ 6:30 PM, The Bill Murray, London

Sara Barron brings her newest work in progress show to the Bill Murray this month, asking the all important questions: is it your fault your angry? and is it too late to blame your mum? Barron has multiple telly, stage and podcast credits including being a contestant on Would I Lie to You?, a Live at the Apollo set, and getting nominated for the Edinburgh Award in 2018, and more recently a podcast about Succession. I dare you to name a media that Barron hasn’t touched.

EMMA SIDI: IS SUE GRAY (WIP)

Thurs 27 June @ 6:30 PM, The Bill Murray, London

Actor, writer, comedian and character comic, with previous credits including Starstruck, Stath Lets Flats and Ghosts, Emma Sidi brings her newest (and 4th) character comedy show to the Bill Murray this month. With politician anecdotes and some hilarious flirty email back and forth, Sue Gray is a hilarious addition to Sidi’s character roster.

KIRSTY MANN: SKELETONS

Fri 24-25 June @ 8:45 PM, Soho Theatre, London

Kirtsy Mann is a Funny Women Awards finalist, who brings her debut show from Edinburgh 2023 to Soho Theatre this month. Skeletons is about Mann’s secret: she’s actually a doctor disguised as a comedian… Mann combines character comedy and storytelling in her stand up hour. Intrigued?? Get a ticket!

ANIA MAGLIANO & SOPHIE DUKER: 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS

Sat 8 June @ 2:30 PM, The Bill Murray, London

You may know Sophie Duker from recently winning series thirteen of Taskmaster, and less recently reaching the final in the Funny Women Awards. Duker has a Live at the Apollo set (the holy grail), and appeared on telly panel shows including 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Ania Magliano has just finished a tour of her sold out Fringe show from 2023, which was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show, and (separately but importantly) Magliano was also a Funny Women Finalist 2020. This ought to be a corker.

Wendy’s House is a monthly queer comedy night in London, and seeing as June is pride month you really have no excuse but to visit, tbh. Previous lineups include: Sophie Duker, Olga Koch, Fern Brady and Reuben Kaye. This month’s lineup features: Dom McGovern, Matthew Ali, Pravanya Pillay and more TBC!

Comedy Shorts Award Entry Requirements

The deadline for registration for the Comedy Shorts Award has passed.

Funny Women NextUp…Comedy Shorts Award

Are you a budding Director? Producer? Screenwriter? Are you collaborating with friends to make a funny video? Then we are looking for YOU!

If you have a short film or sketch that you think is hilarious, then enter your work for our Comedy Shorts Award to be in with a chance of winning some life-changing support and mentoring from comedy professionals.

WHAT KIND OF FILM ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

A 1- 6 minute film that can take the form of anything comical. It’s a great opportunity to show us your creative flair and have fun!

WHO CAN ENTER?

This award is open to all women filmmakers and content developers. The film must be an original narrative created, produced and devised by a woman, or women, although male cast and crew members are allowed.

ARE THERE ANY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR MY FILM?

Yes – we require all films to be 6 minutes or under, to be entirely original dialogue, to not feature brand logos and most importantly, to only use music with the written consent of the performer and/or publisher either personally or via the PRS system https://www.prsformusic.com/ .

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY FILM?

We will broadcast selected entries on our Funny Women YouTube channel and social media (so keep an eye out) and the top 10 finalists’ films will also hosted on a dedicated Funny Women Comedy Shorts Awards page on our website. We will also broadcast the final 3 entries as part of the grand final night.

HOW IS IT JUDGED?

Films are judged for production, concept, delivery/performance, creativity, writing and overall funniness. The top 10 films are then viewed by an independent judging panel of top television and film industry professionals who will choose one overall winner and two runners up. The final three will be invited to attend the grand final in London on the 23rd September.
