The stage is set for the LGBTQ+ New Comedian of the Year 2024 grand finale on 11th June at the Clapham Grand. Last year’s Funny Women Stage Award runner up, Victoria Comedy (formerly known as Victoria Olsina), who won the competition in 2022, will headline.
Jordan Gray will host the spectacular live show featuring nine fresh comedic talents, including James Danielewski, JR Maple, Zuo Fab Goualin, Sallyann Fellows, Caitlin Powell, Kate Sharp, Marty Gleeson, and Ciara O’Connor, who are set to deliver a night of laughter.
The celebrity judging panel is made up of 2004 Funny Women Award winner Zoe Lyons, BBC regular Jen Brister, iconic queen maker Jonny Woo, and TikTok sensation Daniel Foxx. The judges face the tough task of picking the standout performer from this impressive lineup.
Chris Smith, founder of Comedy Bloomers, shared his excitement: “This year’s journey has been incredible! We’ve traveled across the UK and Ireland to find the best LGBTQ+ comedians. Starting with 93 acts, we now have nine finalists. Our lineup predominantly features non-male gay acts, showcasing the diverse talent in our community.”
Smith highlighted the competition’s growth, now in its third year, and its role in promoting new LGBTQ+ talent. “Comedy Bloomers provides a platform for emerging comedians to showcase their skills. Performing in front of top judges is no small feat, but our finalists are up to the challenge.”
The judges are equally enthusiastic. Host Jordan Gray remarked, “I’m thrilled to host the LGBTQ+ New Comedian of the Year 2024. This competition is a crucial springboard for queer comic talent. Long live the LGBTQ+ Comedy Family!”
Zoe Lyons expressed her excitement about judging again, recalling the impressive talent from previous years. “The talent is astounding, and it’s wonderful to see these acts thrive.”
Jen Brister emphasized the importance of such competitions. “Being a comedian is the best job, but breaking into the industry can be tough. Competitions like this offer vital visibility, building confidence and expanding networks.”
Jonny Woo praised the quality of emerging talent. “The originality of new performers continues to amaze me. Being part of this event, which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, is special. The hardest part will be choosing just one winner.”
Daniel Foxx looked forward to seeing the unique styles of the finalists. “It’s crucial for performers to stay true to their unique sense of humour. I’ll be looking for finalists who enjoy their performance and bring their individuality to the stage.”
