Happy New Year one and all! It’s January, it’s the Monday of months, we’ve already had two storms, the fence has blown over and we’re all in a bit of a post NYE frazzle. But do not panic, here to soothe you this January, there is live comedy as usual (as opposed to business as usual, obv). Read on to hear about some stand up, variety night and work-in-progress hour show recommendations to kick off 2024.

1. TOURS (& WIPS)

SARAH PASCOE

Mon 29 Jan @ 7:30 PM, Out The Box Comedy Club, Hampton Hill Theatre

Author, comedian, actor, presenter and (arguably most importantly) Funny Women Award runner up 2008, there isn’t a lot Sarah Pascoe hasn’t done. On telly; Live at the Apollo, and recently presenting The Great British Sewing Bee, Pascoe has also written 2 books, which have taken the form of podcasts. A guaranteed evening of top stand up from a seasoned pro, get yourself down to Outside The Box comedy club in Hampton Hill Theatre.

SINDHU VEE, ALPHABET (WIP)

Also appearing in December’s gig guide, you can catch Sindhu Vee’s acclaimed show Alphabet again this month at The Bill Murray, as she warms up for her next stand up special. What better way to enjoy the second Tuesday in January eh?

NINA CONTI, WIP

Fri 16 Jan @ 6:00 PM, Angel Comedy, The Bill Murray

Nina Conti, the BAFTA nominated comedian, actress and ventriloquist with a monkey and sometimes giant mouth masks, is performing a WIP at The Bill Murray this month, before spending 2 months in New York performing ‘The Dating Show‘, and later on, setting out on a UK tour. Conti has performed and created various short films, stand up specials, radio and TV features. Catch her WIP before she’s off across the pond next month.

JESSICA FOSTESKEW, POTENCH? (WIP)

Jessica Fostekew, nominated for the Edinburgh Fringe Award in 2019, brings her new WIP show Potench? to The Bill Murray, after a successful stint and subsequent online special of her previous tour Hench. Fostekew also co-hosts Guilty Feminist podcast. So go on, hurry over to The Bill Murray on Monday to catch her.

LOUISE YOUNG: FERAL

Thurs-Sat 25-27 Jan @ 7:15 PM, Soho Theatre

Winning Best Newcomer at Edinburgh Fringe last year, and Funny Women Award finalist 2018, Louise Young is set for stardom in 2024. Feral covers sticky situations from her past and observations on growing up in working class Newcastle as a half Geordie half Turkish lesbian. You can read our review of Feral here.

TATTY MACLEOD: FUGUE

French english comedian Tatty Macleod, Funny Women Awards finalist 2022, brings her show Fugue to Soho Theatre off the back of a successful Fringe run last year – you can read our review of her show here. Macleod covers questions of identity and culture clashes in her set, some snippets of which have gone Tik Tok viral.

CLAUDINE ULLMAN, MRS PERSONALITY (WIP)

Thurs 25 Jan @ 6:30 PM, The Bill Murray

Comedian, improviser and actor Claudine Ullman brings her WIP show Mrs Personality to the Bill Murray this month, before performing in Australia later on in the year. Ullman spent 2022 winning ‘Mrs Personality’ in the Ms South Africa beauty pageant, and her show explores the world of pageantry, and it’s pressures on women.

NATALIE PALAMIDES, WEER (WIP)

Tues-Sat 16-20 Jan @ 9:15 PM, Soho Theatre

Edinburgh Comedy Award best Newcomer 2017, clown and character comedian Natalie Palamides performs her new WIP show Weer at Soho Theatre for a 5 night run, off the back of performing in Edinburgh last year. Weer follows the story of 2 lovers (both played by Palamides), on what will be their last day together on June 19th 1999.

SARAH ROBERTS, SILKWORM WIP

Off the back of performing at Fringe last year, Sarah Roberts brings her WIP show Silkworm to The Bill Murray this month. Roberts was BBC New Comedy Award nominee 2022, and according to her show bio, is the worlds youngest, smallest and most normal comedian.

Comedy Shorts Award Entry Requirements

The deadline for registration for the Comedy Shorts Award has passed.

Funny Women NextUp…Comedy Shorts Award

Are you a budding Director? Producer? Screenwriter? Are you collaborating with friends to make a funny video? Then we are looking for YOU!

If you have a short film or sketch that you think is hilarious, then enter your work for our Comedy Shorts Award to be in with a chance of winning some life-changing support and mentoring from comedy professionals.

WHAT KIND OF FILM ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

A 1- 6 minute film that can take the form of anything comical. It’s a great opportunity to show us your creative flair and have fun!

WHO CAN ENTER?

This award is open to all women filmmakers and content developers. The film must be an original narrative created, produced and devised by a woman, or women, although male cast and crew members are allowed.

ARE THERE ANY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR MY FILM?

Yes – we require all films to be 6 minutes or under, to be entirely original dialogue, to not feature brand logos and most importantly, to only use music with the written consent of the performer and/or publisher either personally or via the PRS system https://www.prsformusic.com/ .

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY FILM?

We will broadcast selected entries on our Funny Women YouTube channel and social media (so keep an eye out) and the top 10 finalists’ films will also hosted on a dedicated Funny Women Comedy Shorts Awards page on our website. We will also broadcast the final 3 entries as part of the grand final night.

HOW IS IT JUDGED?

Films are judged for production, concept, delivery/performance, creativity, writing and overall funniness. The top 10 films are then viewed by an independent judging panel of top television and film industry professionals who will choose one overall winner and two runners up. The final three will be invited to attend the grand final in London on the 23rd September.
