At the end of Funny Women’s week-long Comedy Crash Course in November, we were asked to prepare and present to the group a short piece of content. Mine was a retrospective, and Funny Women has published it here to give a flavour of the lessons learnt and camaraderie enjoyed!
Don’t Mind the Gap
Don’t mind the gap between what makes me laugh and what I create
My comedy writing train has only just set off.
First station I come to, on hops burlesque Alex, captures my attention,
Sandra breezes in all Baltic… and Ruth… expressing loads of Latina passion.
Now UK Ruth joins us underground, anything to avoid her bus nemesis above
Make some space for Kate, tall dark and stand up
Lorna, who faces fears, as well as Lynne evoking ups and downs.
Doors are closing as Dervla – the nicest IT leader – squeezes in,
Gets a helpful shove from Laura who’s simply the best
Wait, wait hold the door for Margarita Maggi and hopefully a big tray of drinks for us all.
Mockumentary Charlotte makes it in too, along with Mariana the Organiser Extraordinaire
That’s it. We’re off. The journey has begun. Funny writers one and all.
Gaining confidence, loving, hating, wishing, exaggerating wildly, finding topics, aligning personas, clarifying the joke
So pleased to have met you all; and thank you, it’s been a blast.
Hope our punchlines cross again someday in the future
But for now, don’t mind the gap between what makes me laugh and what I create.
