Liz Guterbock performed at our last Funny Women Awards semi-final held in Edinburgh and impressed our industry judges, which means she is through to our grand final at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London!
Funny Women: How does it feel to be through to the 2019 Funny Women Awards final?
Liz Guterbock: Incredible. I keep thinking about what an amazing show we’re going to give people on the 19th, because WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT LINEUP!? The finalists are all women I look up to, and it feels so special to be part of this outrageously great group.
FW: Describe your comedy to us.
LB: I weave a little California sunshine into my wry, story-driven stand up. I’ll give you a good picture of what happens when a Type-A personality moves to Britain, and things don’t exactly go to plan.
FW: What inspired you to start doing stand up?
LB: My friend Leanne Davis is a great comedy writer and performer and I went to some of her stand-up gigs. I was so impressed with everything she was doing. I know I grilled her with a million questions about stand-up afterwards, and Leanne was a lot more perceptive than me… she could tell I was itching to try stand-up, but was too scared. She said the only way to start stand-up is to try it. It took me two years after that initial nudge to do it, but I’m so grateful to Leanne for telling me to stare my fears in the face!
FW: Who are your favourite funny women?
LB: A short list: Kristen Schaal, Tiffany Haddish, Bebe Neuwirth, Jen Brister and Natasia Demetriou.
