Isma Almas is gay, Muslim and Pakistani. For years she tried to hide a part of it and was even married to a man with whom she has two children. Now, fully comfortable in her own skin, she wants to tell us a little bit more about her experience.
We get to know about Isma’s current relationship and what led them to decide to adopt a child. We’re surprised by the adoption statistics and the very specific difficulties a gay, Muslim, Pakistani woman faces when going through the process.
In a show that deals with difficult issues or race and religion, and while showcasing it to a majority white audience, Almas is able to plant the laughs, which is a feat in itself. About a Buoy is an emotional story about the boy that kept her afloat and it’s at times hard for the comedian to hold her emotions back.
