While flicking through the Edinburgh Fringe schedule at 1:00 am before I took my Ryanair flight, the name Caution: Deadline ahead, a Comedy about Procrastination definitely caught my attention. As a natural procrastinator, I was excited to learn of Christina Lark’s insight into procrastinating and hoped to find a solution to my own issues.
My fifth day of the fringe I arrived at the C Aquila, 10 minutes early for Cristina’s show. Ironically, Caution: Deadline Ahead was running 10 minutes late. Intentional or not, I stood downstairs laughing to myself at the irony while an older gentleman impatiently tapped his foot. I think he needed this show more than I did.
Cristina begins by portraying two versions of herself simultaneously. One six months before her show and one 20 minutes before. Immediately relatable, she makes the point that when offered an opportunity you only see the results, not the work involved.
With her father from Barcelona she explains how she is culturally expected to become a procrastinator – have you seen the Sagrada Família? Cristina’s show borders between stand-up and character comedy. Productively messy, Cristina’s best bits were when she spoke to the audience, losing some interest when breaking into slightly bizarre characters but always staying relevant to the point of procrastination.
With a promising outlook, I left Cristina’s show feeling less alone about my desire to postpone work and even considered writing this review next month. After all, time is an illusion anyway.
