2014 Funny Women Awards finalist Sam Baines’s new work in progress show 1 Woman, A Dwarf Planet and 2 Cox brings together her two passions: science and the arts. Well, three passions, science, the arts and Brian Cox – having been told at school that she must choose between them (science and art, the Brian Cox passion came later) Sam has finally found a way to marry the two.
The show combined stand up with a powerpoint presentation and a nod to Pavlov’s dog with a pun bell, all in a bid to impress Professor Brian Cox. Because she likes to always be a step ahead Sam reckons the best way to impress the physicist would be to become an astronaut, so she’s done her research and it turns out that just being a woman makes her better qualified than Brian to survive in space.
I think everyone learned something in this 50 minute show, in which Sam effortlessly mingled science facts, feminism and jokes. Just because this show concerns weighty matters such as gravity (THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT) doesn’t mean Sam can’t include some rude material which she calls her ‘astronaughties’, which occasionally seemed to shock the Brighton Fringe audience “It’s five thirty guys! This show is on at three thirty in Edinburgh!”
A joyful, self-deprecating and funny show that Professor Brian Cox (and you) should definitely go and see!
