We held our breath on this one until it was confirmed – but now we know that the reboot of Ghostbusters is going to have an all-female lead cast. No more wondering who you’re gonna call (…groan…).
It’s true that the original Ghostbusters is something of an iconic film. It first came out three years before I was born, but I can’t think of anyone I know who hasn’t seen it. And yes, the trend for remaking older movies rather than coming up with something new has started to grate. Naturally not everyone is on board with covering similar ground.
But is it that simple? From the initial reports, this sounds like much more than a gender swap. The new main characters will have their own personalities and backstories, rather than being carbon copies of the original four in different bodies. That in itself is encouraging.
Given the comedy creds of the women involved, I’m also personally expecting a funnier film than the original. That’s not to say that the 1984 version wasn’t funny. Just that, with the spotlight now firmly on these ladies, they’re likely to up their game.
The new ‘Ghostbusters’ movie is scheduled for July 2016. Filming’s meant to start in New York City this summer, so this might be the time to book a holiday to the Big Apple and see if you can get any sneak previews.
