It was Rosie Wilby who first drew my attention to Jen Brister, in her show about relationships called 'Is Monogamy Dead?' Rosie cited Jen Brister as someone very funny who many lesbian comedians admire (this admiration may or may not be platonic). So with Rosie's endorsement I thought I should add Jen Brister and her show 'Wishful Thinking' to my Edinburgh Fringe Festival schedule.
Jen Brister is 39 and has a lot of things to fit into her life now. Time with her girlfriend, maybe a bit of political activisim and shouting at the telly. When is she ever going to find time to get to the garden centre?
On top of all of this as someone of Spanish heritage Jen also has dark body hair to contend with. A thing her feminist Spanish mother has a lot to say about when she isn't spouting statistics that may or may not have been thoroughly researched.
This is a fun show that successfully mixes the personal with the political at a time when many feel politically disinfranchised. If you like fake statistics, overbearing mother quotes and anecdotes regarding lesbian bars then this is the show for you. And if you don't know if you like these things or not you should probably go to as it's part of the free festival.
