Funny Women Fest

Funny Women and Gilded Balloon bring you a feast of comedy, interviews and highlights featuring the best of the fest with a different host and line up every day.

Today’s host Lara A King is joined by guests, Zahra Barri, Rosie Wilby, Emily Lloyd-Saini and North London’s most fabulous casual singers Angels of Kaos.

Lara A King is an award-winning comedian and improviser performing at The Comedy Store, The Stand, The Top Secret Comedy Club, The Leicester Square Theatre and Downstairs At The Kings Head.    She has written and produced three successful full length shows for The Edinburgh Festival, The Brighton Festival and The Women In Comedy Festival; she is a favourite at the UK’s largest Lesbian Festival, LFest and the International Women’s Festival on Lesvos, Greece; she participated in the ‘Spreading The Love’ Tour with the UK’s longest standing all-female improvisation troupe, The Short And Girlie Show and after a National Tour with top cabaret trio Fascinating Aida she is often recognised as ‘the wee fella on the drum’ in their globally viral youtube sensation “Cheap Flights”

“A fabulous demeanour, champions the conversational quality of comedy.”    Three Weeks

Zahra Barrie is a bit like the country of Turkey, in that she’s a mix of Eastern and Western culture, and also she is a bird.    Her 2017 solo Fringe show is a fun look into Eastern and Kanye Western Culture. As heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra, BBC Radio 2 and Talk Radio.   She is also appearing in AAA Stand Up and is a BBC New Comedy Award semi-finalist.

‘Her anecdotal comedy is as hilarious as it is unbelievable… her energy and charm completely won us over’ (BroadwayBaby.com)

Rosie Wilby (BBC Radio 4 regular) poignantly interweaves comedy, memoir, love letters, breakup emails and Richard Hawley music to investigate the aftermath of separation in a post-Gwyneth world.   Her show The Conscious Uncoupling was commissioned by London’s Southbank Centre for Festival of Love and was shortlisted, via public vote, for Funny Women Best Show 2016.

And as if that isn’t enough, we’ll also be asking you to help us raise awareness of #PeriodPoverty. Bring a packet of tampons or sanitary pads and we will be working with www.periodpoverty.scot to donate them to the nearest food bank, refuge or charity for distribution to women less fortunate than ourselves.
