Sagar Dreamcast

After bringing us Sagar Mega Drive at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Fiona Sagar is back with the less popular Sagar Dreamcast. When I say less popular, I’m referring to the Sega game consoles, not the character comedy shows in question as even if in a small room, there was no seat free for takers.

During the show, we meet five different characters with distinct and specific perspectives of the world. Either because they were born in a different time, lived through a different life experience, are the opposite gender, or aren’t even human, these characters make observations about our current times, highly visible themes in the media, or Fiona’s own personal life choices. All of this written by the pen – or most probably a laptop – of a modern day woman, and thus reflecting the independent, feminist point of view of the performer.

The five characters interact heavily with the audience and the small venue the show is at makes it particularly easy for this to be a truly shared experience between everyone and almost make us believe we’re in the character’s living rooms. With every show that relies on audience interaction for the action to progress and that can be led astray by what the intervenients say, the performer’s improvisation skills are greatly called into action. Fiona’s friendliness and smile made even the shier punter keen to participate. The comedian was never left speechless and didn’t break character once, even when the members of the audience pulled on stage were a little bit cheeky.
