Keeping up the remakes

Nothing is sacred these days.

We cheered when a remake of Ghostbusters with an all-female lead cast was announced. And when the same news broke for an Ocean’s Eleven reboot.

While these are all great things for females in comedy and acting, it does feel like remakes are all we’re going to get for the forseeable future.

According to several sources, we’re in line for a similar sort-of-new take on classic comedy Keeping Up Appearances. The show – working title ‘Young Hyacinth’ – will be about the younger Mrs. Bucket. We’d see Hyacinth at 19,

It’s one of several golden oldies making a comeback to celebrate some of the best, enduring BBC comedies. Strangely, this is to mark the 60th anniversary of the first Hancock’s Half Hour episode. We’re not getting that, but some other comedy shows instead. So we might also get to see revivals of The Good Life and Are You Being Served? soon.

One of the shows strongly rumoured to be returning is Ronnie Barker’s prison-based sitcom Porridge. Seeing as the latest film version of Dad’s Army includes several new female characters not in the original show, we wonder if any women will make it into Porridge’s cast. A few lady visitors wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. (get it, stretch. Prison? Never mind.)

Keeping Up Appearances certainly wasn’t short of strong women – Hyacinth easily dominating them all. We’ve got the return of her relatives Daisy, Violet and Rose to look forward to. And, with any luck, there’ll be a pair of terrified neighbours for Hyacinth to annoy.
